FIQH AL-ASMAA AL-HUSNAA CLASS 3 STUDY NOTES

Notes for Class #3 of Fiqhul-Asmaa al-Husnaa

Abu Muhammad al-Maghribee

This is a continuation of the introduction to the principles by which we understand the Names and Attributes of Allahu ta’aala; reading from the book The Correct Aqeedah and That Which Opposes It by Sheikh ibn Baaz, rahimahullah.

We begin by remembering the statement of the sheikh:

It is from eemaan in Allah to have faith in His Beautiful Names and Lofty Attributes which are found in the Book of Allah, azza wa jal, and have been affirmed in the authentic sunnah of the Messenger And we do this without tahreef (distorting the words or meanings), without ta’teel (divesting or denying His Names or Attributes), without takyeef (asking “how”) and without tamtheel (making resemblance of Allah to any of His creation).

Some of the statements of the imaams of the past regarding these principles:

Rabee’ah bin Abee Abdir-Rahmaan (died in 136, was from amongst the tabi’oon of Madinah) said: “Al-istawa (Allah’s Ascending) is known, and how is not comprehendable, and from Allah is the Message (islam) and upon the Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم is to clearly convey it, and upon us is to affirm it.

Imaam Malik said: “Al-istawa is known, how is unknown, to have eemaan in it is obligatory and to question it is an innovation.”

Abdullah ibn Mubaarak said: “We know that our Lord, the Most Perfect, is above the heavens, above his Arsh (throne), separate from His creation.

Knowing and understanding these principles is the door to the proper understanding of the Beautiful and Perfect Names of Allah and His Lofty Attributes.  Whoever wishes to read additional books of the great ualama of the past on this topic regarding our creed may turn to such books like:

Kitaabus-Sunnah by Abdullah ibn Imaam Ahmad (died in 290 H.)

Kitabut-Tawheed by Imaam Muhammad ibn Khuzaymah (died 311 H.)

Kitaabus-Sunnah by Abul-Qaasim al-Laalikaaee at-Tabaree (died 418 H.)

Aqeedatul-Hamawiyyah of Sheikhul-Islam ibn Taymiyyah (died 728 H)

We must know and adhere to the Aqeedah (belief) of Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jamaa’ah, those who are on the pathway of the Salafusl-Saaleh, the pathway of that which the Messengerصلى الله عليه وسلم left his Companions upon.  They affirm for Allah that which He has affirmed for Himself in His Book and what has been affirmed for Him in the authentic sunnah of His Messenger  .And we must hold firmly to the truth, humbly accepting it, while being sincere to Allah in the quest for it. And Allah wilh grant such person harmony with the truth and show him clear evidences. And Allah says in the Quran:

بَلْ نَقْذِفُ بِالْحَقِّ عَلَى الْبَاطِلِ فَيَدْمَغُهُ فَإِذَا هُوَ زَاهِقٌ وَلَكُمُ الْوَيْلُ مِمَّا تَصِفُونَ

Nay, We fling (send down) the truth (this Qur'ân) against the falsehood (disbelief), so it destroys it, and behold, it (falsehood) is vanished. And woe to you for that (lie) which you ascribe (to Us) (against Allâh by uttering that Allâh has a wife and a son). Surat Al-Anbiya 21:1

And no example or similitude do they bring (to oppose or to find fault in you or in this Qur'ân), but We reveal to you the truth (against that similitude or example), and the better explanation thereof. Surat Al-Furqan 25:33

FIQH AL-ASMAA AL-HUSNAA CLASS 3

This is the weekly Wednesday afternoon class on the study of the Names and Attributes of Allah, azza wa jal, and how we understand them and act upon that understanding in our everyday lives.

This is our third class in this series and we continue with the introduction to the obligation of having the correct understanding of Tawheed al-Asmaa was-Siffat.  While this class is specifically given to the women, we encourage everyone to join us.  This portion of the introduction was taken from one of the works of Imaam ibn Baaz, rahimahullaah, (The Correct Islamic Creed and That Which Opposes It).

Brief study notes as well as monthly quizzes will be posted here on the blog.  We ask Allah to  reward our diligent sisters worldwide who contribute to these notes.  May Allah raise them in rank and bless them in their time and good efforts.  Aameen.

Fiqh al-Asmaa al-Husnaa Class 2 Study Notes

Notes for Class #2 of Fiqhul-Asmaa al-Husnaa

From The Correct Aqeedah and That Which Opposes It by Sheikh ibn Baaz

Abu Muhammad al-Maghribee

We continue with this introduction to the principles by which we understand the Names and Attributes of Allahu ta’aala.

We must know the importance of having the correct aqeedah (creed).

Aqeedah (creed or belief) is the foundation of the religion. It is that which all deeds of the heart, tongue and limbs are built upon. If a person’s aqeedah is not sound, then their deeds will not benefit them (prayer, fasting, charity, etc…).

The correct aqeedah is that which the Companions of the Messenger of Allah were upon, may Allah be pleased with them and the Salafus-Saaleh were upon after them.  (As the Messenger sss said, “Hold fast to my sunnah and the sunnah of the rightly-guided khaleefahs after me.”  Reported by Abu Dawud and Sheikh al-Albaani graded it Sahih)

We must have the proper understanding regarding the principles related to Allah’s Names and Attributes.

Understanding the principles surrounding the belief in Allah’s Names and Attributes is an area where many have gone astray.  And the proper understanding is what differentiates us from the the deviant sects.

We believe in Allah’s Names and Attributes which are found in the Quran and the authentic narrations of the Messenger sss. These are from the unseen, so it is not permissible to take them from any other sources.

We affirm for Allah that which He affirmed for Himself in His Book and upon the tongue of His Messenger sss.  And we do this:

Without tahreef  تحريف - (distorting) this means changing the wording or the meaning

Without ta’teel تعطيل - (divesting) this means to deny the Attributes of Allah

Without takyeef تكييف - this means to ask or explain how (kayfa) the Attributes are

Without tamtheel تمثيل - (making resemblance) - this means to liken any of the Attributes of Allah to that of any of the creation

It is upon us to have eemaan in Allah and His Beautiful Names and Lofty Attributes in a manner which befits Him, subhaanahu wa ta’aala, as Allah says in the Quran:

لَيْسَ كَمِثْلِهِ شَيْءٌ وَهُوَ السَّمِيعُ البَصِيرُ

There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the All-Hearer, the All-Seer. (Ash-Shura 42:11)

This is a clear refutation against the Mumaththilah (those who make tamtheel).  They say that as Allah affirms for Himself a hand, since we have hands, they say there is resemblance.  No! Rather Allah informs us there is nothing like unto Him. And we cannot make this resemblance.

Also another proof found in the Quran is the saying of Allahu ta’aala:

فَلاَ تَضْرِبُواْ لِلّهِ الأَمْثَالَ إِنَّ اللّهَ يَعْلَمُ وَأَنتُمْ لاَ تَعْلَمُونَ

So put not forward similitudes for Allâh (as there is nothing similar to Him, nor He resembles anything). Truly! Allâh knows and you know not. (An-Nahl 16:74)

Believing and having eemaan in the Names and Attributes of Allah without tahreef, without ta’teel, without takyeef and without tamtheel, this is from the aqeedah of the Companions and after them the taabi’een and the atba’a taabi’een after them and the great imaams who followed in their footsteps.  Imaam al-awzaa’ee said, “I asked az-Zuhri and Makhul about the ayaat pertaining to Allah’s Attributes and they replied to leave them as they are.”

Note** The taabi’een are the generation who came after the Messenger, but met the companions.  While the atba’a taabi’een came after the companions but were with the taabi’een.

FIQH AL-ASMAA AL-HUSNAA CLASS 1 Study Notes

Here are some brief study notes for Class 1 of this series.  May Allah reward the our diligent sisters who contributed to these.  Aameen.

Notes for Class #1 of Fiqhul-Asmaa al-Husnaa

Abu Muhammad al-Maghribee

Sheikh Abdur-Razzaaq al-Badr explains that it is upon us to learn about the Names and Attributes of Allah (Tawheed al-Asmaa was-Siffaat) and we should make this a priority and give this great importance in our lives. There are many proofs for this from the Quran, a few of which are:

ٌفَاعْلَمُواْ أَنَّ اللّهَ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ

..Know that Allâh is All-Mighty, All-Wise. (Al-Baqarah 2:209)

...And know that Allâh is Rich (Free of all wants), and Worthy of all praise. (Al-Baqarah 2:267)

then know that Allâh is your Maulâ (Patron, Lord, Protector and Supporter, etc.), (what) an Excellent Maulâ, and (what) an Excellent Helper! (Al-Anfal 8:40)

Know that Allâh is Severe in punishment and that Allâh is Oft--Forgiving, Most Merciful. (Al-Ma'idah 5:98)

So know (O Muhammad SAW) that Lâ ilâha ill-Allâh (none has the right to be worshipped but Allâh), and ask forgiveness for your sin, and also for (the sin of) believing men and believing women. And Allâh knows well your moving about, and your place of rest (in your homes). (Muhammad 47:19)

Among many other ayaat…

Knowing that "al-Azeez" and "al-Hakeem" are from of Allah’s Names or the mere utterance of these or other names is NOT ENOUGH. This, and all acts of worship, should be done in the manner which the Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم set for us as an example and that of the Companions and the salafus-saaleh after them. As occurs in the hadith of the Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم wherein he said:

من عمل عملا ليس عليه أمرنا فهو رد

“Whoever does any action that is not in accordance with this matter of ours, will have it rejected.” Reported by Muslim

So along with memorizing these most beautiful Names and lofty Attributes, we do this while studying and gaining their proper understanding and then acting upon this understanding will aid us in every part of our lives; when making a decision, in marriage and interacting with our families, dealing with hardships and even how to conduct ourselves in times of ease.

This manner of learning was the way of the noble Companions, may Allah be pleased with them all. This was narrated by Abu Abdir-Rahman that he said, “The companions of the Messenger who used to teach us Quran informed us that they would not pass ten ayaat until they had learned the rulings contained in them and acted upon them.” Reported by Ahmad

Mujaahid (from the tabieen) said that he read the Quran three times to ibn Abbaas. And he stopped him at each verse to check his understanding of it.

Sheikh al-Faifi mentioned that Imam Malik was informed of a 7 year old boy who had memorized the Quran and he disliked this (memorizing without understanding).

So it is upon us to strive as much as we’re able to gain the proper understanding of what we learn and memorize (example is studying from the trustworthy books of tafseer from the likes of ibn Katheer and as-Saa’dee).

We should know that the Names and Attributes of Allah are the GREATEST and BEST of things in the Quran.

Ibn Taymiyyah (d. 728), who was one of the great scholars of his time, said that the mention of Allah’s Names and Attributes in the Quran is greater than the mention of the food, drink and marriage in Paradise combined. And it is also greater in number than the mention of the Day of Judgement.

The greatest ayah found in the Quran is Ayat al-Kursi which contains both from the Names and Attributes of Allah, azza wa jal. It was narrated that the Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم asked Ubay bin Ka’b, “Do you know which is the greatest ayah of the Quran?” He replied, “Allah laa illaaha illa huwa alHayyul-Qayyum.” (Ayat al-Kursi). The Messenger patted him on his chest and said, “Knowledge congratulates you yaa Abal-Mundhir.”

The greatest surah found in the Quran is Surat al-Faatihah one proof for this is the hadith of Sa’eed al-Mu’alla when he narrated the Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم said to him, “I will surely teach you a surah which is the greatest surah in the Quran,” Then he said, “Al-hamdu Lillahi Rabb al- ‘Aalameen…” It is also mentioned that the Messenger said, “In this surah there is a greater mention of the Names and Attributes of Allah than the mention of the Last Day.”

And also regarding Surat al-Ikhlaas, it was narrated by Aishah that the Messenger was informed of a man who used to read Surat al-Ikhlaas (often). And when the man was asked why he did that, he replied, “Because it is a description of ar-Rahmaan, and I love to recite it.” The Messenger then said: “Tell him that Allaah loves him.” Reported by al-Bukhaari.

Abu Muhammad closed with reminding us of the importance of seeking knowledge and some of the statements of ibn Uthaymeen regarding the favor Allah has granted us by making it so easy with the use of technology. Seekers of knowledge in the past used to have to walk for months to sit with one of the scholars or would have to write their words by hand to own one of their books. But as for us, we can find books by the trustworthy scholars with ease and even listen to their lectures from the comfort of our homes by way of this modern technology. And may Allah make us from those who find much benefit in it and may He safeguard us and our families from its harms. Aameen.
